I realise that this subject is a little “clickbaity” but the message in this week’s email is an important one.
You see a lot of entrepreneurs have what I would call “a profitable job.”
And there is nothing wrong with that.
If that’s what you want.
However, if you really want to scale your business the first thing you may need to do is reflect on how you approach the way you think about your business.
You see in all markets there is a pyramid of success, and this can been seen by geography, or sector or any other criteria you may want to choose.
A small number of businesses are hugely successful, a slightly larger percentage are somewhat less successful (albeit making good money)…
…and then there are the ones on the hamster wheel every month trying to stay with their heads above water…
…and then the rest who are not making enough money just to “keep the lights on.”
And for me (and I’ve seen this a lot in the past eight years) there is a clear difference in the thinking between the top and bottom of the pyramid (and note that those at the bottom are still great people - some of my best friends are in that group).
And the difference?
The successful ones know that the journey of business success goes from “me, to us, to them.”
But what does that mean?
Well, they start with “me.”
Am I making enough money to be able to live a reasonable life based on what I want?
This is a profitable job.
Then they move to “us”.
Are we making enough money to be able to share the wealth and provide a reasonable life for the entire team.
This is a profitable business.
And through to “them.”
Are we building a business that another person would see as a strong investment.
This is a saleable asset.
The power is in accelerating to “them” quickly and robustly.
So, whether you are looking to sell or not, the power is in the thought process on getting to the “them” stage.
