My Real Role (It’s Not What You Think)

My Real Role (It’s Not What You Think)

People think hiring a business coach is about strategy.
Or growth.
Or hitting a revenue target.

And sure - that’s part of it.

But let me tell you what the last few weeks have really looked like.

In one business, the owner is battling something far bigger than cash flow or KPIs.
She’s just been diagnosed with cancer.

Her team?

They’re spiralling.
Not because they’re bad people - but because leadership has stepped back (understandably), and there’s been no clear line of communication or authority in her absence.

What she needed from me wasn’t a fancy strategy session.

She needed trust.
She needed space to talk about what was happening without judgment.
She needed someone who could understand the reality of both business and life… and help her rebuild some stability around both.

And we’re doing that.
Not because I had a pre-written playbook for it.
But because that’s what real coaching is.
Being the person in the wings when things fall apart - and helping to quietly rebuild.

Then there’s another client - different story entirely.

They were banging their heads against a wall with their team.
Morale was down, performance was erratic, and behind the scenes, resentment was brewing.

They wanted a quick fix.
A training day.
A motivation workshop.
A stern email.

But the truth?

They’d hired badly.

Good people. Wrong roles.
Wrong expectations.
Wrong culture fit.

And they needed someone to tell them that.
Firmly. But fairly.

We didn’t just talk about the issue.
We created a plan.
We addressed leadership blind spots.
We put systems in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Sometimes being a coach means calling it out when it’s needed.
Even if it stings.
But doing it with the intention of building something stronger.

And then there’s the husband-and-wife team I’ve been supporting.

They’re both brilliant.
Talented.
Committed.
But they’re pulling in opposite directions - and it’s exhausting them.
And the business.

Half of my role there has been part-coach, part-counsellor, part-mediator.
Because no marketing strategy in the world can save a business where the two directors don’t share a vision.

We worked through it.
We talked about ego, ambition, communication, and compromise.

And we’re getting there.

Not by sweeping things under the rug - but by facing the hard stuff and finding common ground.

Now… I don’t tell you these stories to position myself as some miracle worker.

I tell you them because this is the real value of a coach or consultant.

Not just someone who gives you advice.
But someone who gets you.
Who listens properly.
Who tells you what others won’t.
Who helps you find the path when you’ve wandered off it...or when life throws a curveball and knocks you sideways.

Every business is different.
Every owner is carrying their own invisible load.
And while the outside world sees numbers and logos and job titles, behind closed doors it’s much more personal.

A good coach doesn’t just turn up with frameworks and jargon.
They show up as a critical friend.
An extension of your team.
A steady voice in the noise.
Someone who helps you build what you want...and keeps you going when everything tells you to stop.

So if it’s been feeling heavy lately…
If things aren’t quite right but you can’t pinpoint why…
If you’ve got a challenge that’s bigger than your usual toolkit…

Know this:

You don’t have to carry it alone.

That’s what we’re here for.
