We Should All Be Like My 82 Year Old Aunt…

Last Friday I drove just over two hours to my niece's wedding in Derbyshire and one thing amazed me.

Nope - it wasn't the venue (although the manor house was beautiful).

It wasn't the ceremony (as tear-jerking as it was).

It wasn't the food served (most of which couldn't be pronounced without a stutter).

It wasn't even how beautiful the bride looked (shhh...don't tell her!)

It was the evening disco, where the floor was filled with people reliving their youth, and dancing to songs that took them back to bygone days - yes, even the 80's feels like days of yore!!

And it struck me that whilst everyone on the dancefloor was happy, one person struck me as the happiest person in the room.

My Aunt Liz.

You see Liz spent most of the night under the glitterball, living her best life, without a care in the world, dancing with her husband Tom or whoever happened to pass by her (me included at one point I add!).

They had build several successful businesses in the 80's and 90's and had retired about twenty years ago - to travel and enjoy life.

They were really shaking up the dancefloor, enjoying their evening.

They weren't thinking about their future. They were living their best lives.

Right there and then.

They were dancing like no one was watching them, and the happiness from them, and several other guests of similar ages will stay with me for a long time.

But on Saturday, I was met with a note that a school friend of mine had died that very same day from cancer - at the same age I am now - 47.

And this brought me back to earth with a bump.

Thiese two situations made me think about business owners just like you and me {{contact.first_name}}.

None of us really know how long we have left in this world, especially with what we see each and every day on the news.

The fact that I have made it almost to the half century and am now losing those around me is starting to make me come to terms with my own mortality.

So I've decided to do something about this.

I am going to do the things I said I would, and enjoy each and every day. And I think you should too.

But it's down to each of us to take control and make things happen.

And then we can be like Liz and Tom.

Speak soon,

James
